Your Simple Guide to Dressing Up for Your Job Interview

When applying for a job, no matter how impressive your resume looks, if you blow the job interview, your chances of getting hired can go down drastically.

And one of the biggest things to consider when preparing for a job interview --- besides, of course, how to answer the interview questions ---- is what you’re going to wear for that make-or-break stage of your job application.

Making That Great First Impression

Yes, first impressions last. We can’t avoid the fact that most people judge a book by its cover. We’re oftentimes stereotyped based on what we wear and how we wear it. Certainly, someone who dresses shabbily won’t exactly get a good first impression from most people compared to those that look all tidy and kept.

And during a job interview, the interviewer’s judgement can be influenced by the appearance of the applicant’s getup. Sure, he can wow the interviewer with his excellent command of his language and his demonstration of his skills. But if his clothes are all dirty and wrinkly, that speaks volumes about himself which the interviewer may find unacceptable.

Looking Professional

The goal is to look professional and confident. If you look untidy and unkempt, that can immediately turn off the interviewer right at the get-go before you even start opening your mouth.

It’s true that some companies are more relaxed when it comes to work attire, still, your best bet is to show up at the interview looking as professional as you can.

Know the Company

As it is when you’re preparing your answers to potential job interview questions, you should also research as much as you can about the company you’re applying at.

The more you know, the more you’re informed and, therefore, the more you know about the culture of the company and if they have strict or relaxed rules when it comes to work outfits.

If you can’t research any relevant information about the company, the safest option is to not only dress decently and professionally, but to wear something appropriate to the position you’re applying for. If you’re applying for a managerial or supervisory position, you obviously won’t show up at the interview wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

Dressing for Success

Success at the job interview, that is. A safe but great choice would be a white dress shirt underneath a dark suit. This is not to say, however, that a dark suit or jacket is always necessary. Again, the position you’re applying for dictates the type of ensemble you’ll be putting together.

Heard of power dressing? You don’t have to hold a certain position to power-dress. Right at the interview, get into an outfit that exudes confidence, good style and professionalism. Wearing a red tie on a white dress shirt is an excellent contrast of conservatism and boldness.
